Planet is a free and open-source macOS app for publishing and following web content. It doesn't rely on a central server or service but instead uses IPFS for peer-to-peer content distribution. You can link your content to an Ethereum Name (e.g., planetable.eth) so others can follow you on Planet using your .eth name or access your ENS website through a gateway like eth.limo or eth.sucks. Since both IPFS and ENS are decentralized, Planet helps you to build and follow websites in a decentralized way.

Getting Started

Did you know that you can use an Ethereum Name (ENS) to set up a website? It's true! You can use the Content Hash field, just like you would use an A or CNAME record for a traditional domain name. The standard for this is EIP-1577, and the Content Hash field can accept a few different values. For example, you can use IPFS, which is another decentralized content distribution technology. In fact, the website at vitalik.eth is already using IPFS to host its content.

Follow the updates from vitalik.eth with Planet

After you create a website with Planet, you can easily share it with others by copying its IPNS address. To do this, simply right-click on the item in the sidebar and choose "Copy IPNS." This will copy an IPNS address that looks something like this:

k51qzi5uqu5dgv8kzl1anc0m74n6t9ffdjnypdh846ct5wgpljc7rulynxa74a

You can then paste this IPNS address into your ENS ContentHash like this:

Set Content Hash for Your ENS

Remember to include
ipns://
in front of the string. You've successfully set up a decentralized website using ENS and IPFS.

Solana Name Service (sns.id) is an identity system running on the Solana blockchain. It supports adding an IPNS record to the name, and furthermore, there is a gateway to access
.sol
names with IPFS/IPNS records.

You can register your Solana name at sns.id. Phantom wallet app is recommended, and have some USDC in the wallet.

Step 1 · Copy IPNS

Right-click your website under My Planets and select Copy IPNS. You will get its IPNS in the pasteboard, and it will be a long string that starts with
k51
.

Slug

By default, each post URL uses its UUID, like this:

https://planetable.eth.limo/77BB1A2A-971C-443B-A1F4-F50F205525EF/

You can enter a custom slug here to change the URL to something like:

https://planetable.eth.limo/introducing-planet/

Only lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens can be used in the slug.

Type

By default, each post has a "blog" type, meaning it will appear chronologically on the homepage and be included in the RSS feed. However, for pages like "About Us," you may not want them to appear as blog posts on the homepage. In this case, you can select the "Page" type here.

Navigation

If
Include in Site Navigation
is checked, the post will be included in the site-level navigation. For example, if you have an "About Us" page and want to display it at the top level, this is the option for you.

Navigation Weight
is an integer used for ordering; smaller numbers appear first.

External Link

If you want an item in the site-level navigation to redirect to another URL, you can enter that URL here.

Build New Template

You can create a new template using HTML, CSS, and JS. When the Planet app renders a site, the template can utilize the values provided in the context by the app. The template system is powered by Stencil, a simple yet powerful template language for Swift.

Forking from the default Plain template is an excellent starting point for building your own new template, as it includes most of the code examples you will need.

Template Browser

You can find all the currently installed templates in Tools -> Template Browser. If you plan to build your own template, VS Code is recommended. After installing VS Code, you can right-click on a template and select "Open in VS Code."

Tools -> Template Browser -> Open in VS Code

Add Template from GitHub

By default, all templates are stored in the following folder:

~/Library/Containers/xyz.planetable.Planet/Data/Documents/Planet/Templates

For instance, there is a new work-in-progress template on GitHub:

https://github.com/Planetable/SiteTemplateCroptop

To add this template to the templates folder, use these commands:

cd ~/Library/Containers/xyz.planetable.Planet/Data/Documents/Planet/Templates
git clone https://github.com/Planetable/SiteTemplateCroptop croptop

Once a new template has been added to the templates folder, you must restart the app for it to be recognized.

After the new template is recognized, you can find it in the Template Browser under the Tools menu, or you can choose to use it from the Edit Planet option.

Edit Planet -> Select Template

Built-in Templates

These are the built-in templates in the folder:

plain

sepia

gamedb

grid

When the app updates, it will attempt to update these templates as well. However, if a .git subfolder is detected, it indicates the folder could be part of the developer environment, and the app will not overwrite it.

Planet includes a recent version of the IPFS node and utilizes it to retrieve and publish information on the IPFS P2P network. This integrated IPFS node provides several useful local ports.

To prevent conflicts with other programs that may utilize these ports, such as a pre-existing IPFS desktop application, we have made minor adjustments to the port numbers.

Port 18181

This port serves as the local gateway. You can use it to access content on the IPFS P2P network. Below are a few examples.

Access a specific CID

For example, the v4.2.08.0 release of Uniswap:

CIDv1: bafybeiepywaseoxbaccdblzm6thhqjelkwbamd3guh24wfzba2wwvz6hve

Access via Local Gateway:

http://localhost:18181/ipfs/bafybeiepywaseoxbaccdblzm6thhqjelkwbamd3guh24wfzba2wwvz6hve

Access Uniswap via CID

Access IPNS

IPNS is the naming system utilized by IPFS, which can be accessed through the /ipns/ paths as demonstrated below:

ENS

If an ENS has its content hash pointing to a resource on IPFS, it can be accessed through an IPFS gateway in the following manner:

http://localhost:18181/ipns/vitalik.eth

IPNS: vitalik.eth

DNS

If a DNS name has a DNSLink TXT record pointing to a resource on IPFS, it can be accessed through an IPFS gateway:

http://localhost:18181/ipns/docs.ipfs.tech/

IPNS: docs.ipfs.tech

IPNS

Blogs and websites published from Planet are IPNS. Other Planet users can simply use Follow Planet to receive the latest updates, or these can also be accessed through the local gateway. For example, the IPNS powered planetable.eth is:

k51qzi5uqu5dgv8kzl1anc0m74n6t9ffdjnypdh846ct5wgpljc7rulynxa74a

It can be accessed via the local gateway:

http://localhost:18181/ipns/k51qzi5uqu5dgv8kzl1anc0m74n6t9ffdjnypdh846ct5wgpljc7rulynxa74a

IPNS: planetable.eth

Port 5981

Kubo, the Go implementation of IPFS, exposes an HTTP RPC API that allows you to control the node and run the same commands that you can run from the command line.

You can access this API on port 5981. For example, the following cURL request would return the Identity of the node:

curl -X POST http://localhost:5981/api/v0/id

Origin Isolation

Origin isolation is an important security feature for decentralized app front-ends running on IPFS gateways. So, when you try to access a URL like this:

http://localhost:18181/ipfs/bafybeiepywaseoxbaccdblzm6thhqjelkwbamd3guh24wfzba2wwvz6hve

Kubo will return a redirect to transform the URL into this:

http://bafybeiepywaseoxbaccdblzm6thhqjelkwbamd3guh24wfzba2wwvz6hve.ipfs.localhost:18181/

However, Safari does not support this kind of URL as of this writing:
*.localhost
. This is a known issue recorded in the WebKit bug tracking system:

With the release of Planet 0.11 in December 2022, you can now show your support for content creators by tipping with Ethereum. Here's how to use this new feature:

Connect Wallet

Under the main Planet menu, you'll find a new option called Connect Wallet.

New menu item: Connect Wallet

To use this feature, simply click on the menu item and a QR code will appear. You can then scan the code using a wallet app that supports WalletConnect, such as MetaMask or Rainbow. This will allow you to connect your wallet to the app and access the tipping feature.

Scan the QR code using a wallet app that supports WalletConnect

While browsing ENS dWebsites, you'll see a new tip button in the toolbar. Simply click on the button and choose the amount you'd like to tip. You can select from a range of pre-set amounts to show your support for the content you're enjoying.

Tip Button

Select Amount

When you click the Send button, a transaction will appear in your wallet app on your phone. If everything looks correct, simply confirm the transaction on your phone and it will be sent to the Ethereum network. The content creator will then receive the full amount you tipped, without any deductions. This is a simple transfer of funds between two Ethereum addresses. It's that easy!

Sending transaction

Once the transaction is confirmed and sent, a browser window will open and display the details of the transaction on the Etherscan website. This will allow you to see the status of the transaction and track its progress on the Ethereum network.

Wallet Apps

During the development of this feature, we primarily tested with MetaMask and Rainbow. If your wallet app supports WalletConnect, it should be compatible with this new tipping feature. However, there are some differences in how these two apps support test networks. For example, MetaMask lets you switch between Mainnet, Goerli, and Sepolia, while Rainbow will stay on the initial network you select when you first connect. Keep these differences in mind when using this feature with different wallet apps.

After you have linked IPNS to your ENS domain, you can access your website on .eth domain via these methods.

ETH.LIMO

ETH.LIMO is a fast and reliable gateway to access websites on .eth domains.

You can append .limo to any .eth domain like this:

planetable.eth.limo

And it would work in all browsers.

IPFS Public Gateways

Many IPFS public gateways can load the website on .eth domain by putting the domain in a URL like this:

ipfs.io/ipns/planetable.eth

.bit is a blockchain based identity system powered by Nervos Network blockchain.

It supports several types of DWeb records, including IPNS. You can add an IPNS built with Planet to your .bit domain.

Step 1 · Copy IPNS

Right-click your website under My Planets and select Copy IPNS. You will get its IPNS in the pasteboard, and it will be a long string that starts with
k51
.

Copy IPNS

Step 2 · Add DWeb Record

Go to the .bit Manage dashboard, click Manage Data, and add a new record under DWeb. Select
IPNS
as key, and provide the value you get from Copy IPNS.

Copy IPNS

And save the change. .bit does not need you to pay gas when you update the records.

Step 3 · Access

After the DWeb record becomes effective, you can access your website using the .bit.ink public gateway like this:

planetable.bit.ink

You can also use .bit domain in Follow Planet.

Right-click your website under My Planets and select Copy IPNS. You will get its IPNS in the pasteboard, and it will be a long string that starts with
k51
.

Navigate to your domain on the ENS app, and click "Add/Edit Record" to start changing. And you can paste your IPNS to the Content section. Be sure to add ipns:// before the
k51...
string like this:
